Why Single Track Matters: The Case for Dirt Bike Only Trails in Ohio

Single-track is more than just a narrow ribbon of dirt through the woods it’s the heart of off-highway motorcycling. For many riders, true single track represents challenge, adventure, and the purest form of two wheel trail riding. But here in Ohio, dedicated dirt bike only single-track is limited, and expanding access requires consistent advocacy, land partnerships, maintaince and a strong rider community working together.

What Makes Single-Track Special?

Unlike multi use or wider two track trails, single track is intentionally narrow typically 24", only wide enough for a motorcycle. This creates a more technical, engaging riding experience that keeps riders connected to the terrain. Tight trees, elevation changes, roots, rocks, and natural flow are all part of what makes single track uniquely rewarding.

Safer, More Sustainable Trail Design

Dirt bike focused single track isn’t just fun, it’s better for the land. Properly designed single track reduces erosion, controls water flow, minimizes trail widening and keeps impact concentrated to a small footprint.  Because it’s built for two wheels only, conflicts with larger vehicles and mixed use traffic are significantly reduced, improving safety for everyone.

Growing Opportunities for Ohio Riders

More single track means more reasons for riders to explore Ohio’s public lands.  It encourages new riders to join the sport, supports local tourism  and helps distribute trail use across more terrain to reduce wear. OOHMA works directly with landowners, forest managers, and the state of Ohio,  pushing for additional dirt bike only single track trails and legal riding opportunities statewide.
